Cognitively Impaired Elderly Have High likelihood of Dental Issues and Orofacial Pain

Analysis of 348 participants found “coronal caries, root caries, tooth root remnants or ulcers were present in 50.3%” and of those well enough to express themselves, 25.7% reported Orofacial pain. This means that elderly are left to rot ( at least their mouth’s) in nursing homes.

Sickle Cell Crisis – New Agent Crizanlizumab

Engineered monoclonal antibody proteins that often bind to T cells or other structures to modify disease called  “mabs” because their name ends with it – are becoming popular. Crizanlizumab was engineered to bind to anti-P-selectin  as a monoclonal antibody.  28% were event free on the medication versus 4.2% on placebo. Worse cases (high prior number of vaso-occlusive crisis, concomitant hydrourea, and/or HbSS genotype benefited most.

Post Breast Cancer Surgery Axillary Web Syndrome Lump Confusions

This condition occurs in patients that undergo breast cancer surgery with axillary lymph node dissection. Tight strands that develop in axilla and down arm occur in 6% to 86%  cases following breast cancer surgery.  Confusingly, superficial nodules can be sometimes felt  in axilla but they are not cancerous. I had a recent case that was concerned.
